NWC Minutes-February 3, 2018

NAPLES WALKING CLUB
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2018
MEETING MINUTES

Gail Risner opened the meeting at 8:14 a.m. Twenty-one (21) members were present.  Happy Birthday to our members who have February birthdays:  Patricia Fermanis 2/5, Rick Baker 2/14, and Susan Camino 2/17.

New Members – Welcome to new members Lloyd Adams, Susan Fisher, Jane Wendt, and Mariellen Young.

Naples Pathways Coalition – Gail reported that the Naples Pathways Coalition walk was very successful and that Joanne Dempsey was instrumental in organizing the walk.  Informative articles about the Coalition have been included in the Living in Naples magazine and the Naples Daily News.

Treasurer’s Report – Marsha McGuinness reported that the club has $1,176.22 as of January 2018.  Thank you letters for our donations were received from St. Matthew’s House and the JDRF One Walk.

T-Shirts – Gail indicated that Debbie Valente placed a t-shirt order on Monday, January 29th. They usually take 5-7 days to come in. She will bring them next Saturday (for those that walk up north) and one day during the week for those that walk downtown.

New Business:

  • Open Positions: Gail asked for volunteers to fill the Marketing/Publicity Director & Club Historian/Photographer Board positions.
  • A club members has volunteered their home for a club winter party.  Lucy Sparrazza, Mary Ann Bohannan, and Susan Fisher volunteered to coordinate and determine a date for the party.
  • Gail introduced the possibility of reestablishing a North Naples Walking Group. After discussion, it was suggested that several walks be offered in North Naples for members to determine the desirability of ongoing regular walks.
  • Mary Ann Bohannan suggested a new walk beginning at Barnes and Noble and walking about 2 1/2 to 3 miles out to Clam Pass and down the beach.  She will schedule a date and email members.
  • Gail asked everyone to check and update their member information on our website.  Our Membership Chair will be updating the website membership list. Gail also encouraged everyone to check their email regularly for club updates.
  • Wendy Bright overviewed three opportunities for members: 1.) The Family to Family Kids Crisis Closet is requesting donation of kitchen items for families who are setting up homes after hardship situations.  Items should be brought to Wendy. 2.) Wendy and Linda McNerhany are doing a Road Scholar trip to the Smoky Mountains in September.  Any members who are interested should let Wendy know.  3.) On March 2, 2018 a Lovers Key Kayak trip is scheduled.  The cost if $60.  Interested members should contact Wendy to register.

Future Walks –

  • Mary Moran is scheduling a walk to the Hills of Marco Island for Friday, March 9th.  More details with be emailed to members.
  • February 17th – NAMI 2.5 Mile Walk, Cambier Park.  Club members agreed to donate $100 to the walk and will allow all members to participate. Fun, food and entertainment begins at 8:30 a.m., the walk begins at 9:30 and ends at 11:00.
  • March 10th – PSP Walk at Mackle Park, Marco Island from 10:30-1:30, cost $25.

Mileage – Joanne Dempsey reminded members to email their mileage to her on a monthly basis if they want to track it.  2017 annual mileages were as follows:

Members with over 600 miles were eligible for the $50 drawing. The winner of this year’s drawing was Linda McNerhany – Congratulations Linda!

Joanne also reminded members that any items for the club newsletter should be emailed to her before the 3rd week of the month.  The club meeting minutes are published on our website and are also included in the monthly newsletter.

Gail closed the meeting after asking and receiving approval for the January 6, 2018 Minutes.

Next Meeting – The next meeting of the Naples Walking Club will be on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Greenway.

January 6, 2018

NAPLES WALKING CLUB
SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2018

Due to the weather, our January 6, 2018 meeting was cancelled.  The following information was emailed to all members by our President, Gail Risner:

Beginning next month, monthly meetings will be held at the picnic tables near the entrance to the Greenway. (Feel free to bring a chair if you want).
After the meeting, we will have breakfast at Panera Bread.

We would like to focus on attracting new members this year.  If you are on Facebook, please share any information that we post on the Naples Walking Club’s Facebook page.   Other ideas are welcome.

NEW –  North Naples Walking Group!  We are looking for someone to volunteer to organize a group for regular walks 2-3 days a week in the North Naples area.  Of course, we will all continue to meet on Saturdays at the Greenway.  If you are interested in doing this, please contact Gail Risner 239-398-9920, or gailrisner@yahoo.com.

Tee Shirts – (Debbie Vallante)  – Debbie needs six more shirts in order to meet the minimum of twelve for the next order.  Shirts are $11.00 each.  Also, she has some of the warmer white, pink and blue cotton shirts and wind breaker coats on hand if anyone needs them.  E-mail her at debbiev1@comcast.net with questions or orders.

Walks
January 14 NAPLES DAILY NEWS HALF MARATHON –  Water Station
Meet at 6am Sunday at Gordon Drive where we set up on the
west side of the street.
Park on the median between 18th and 21st Avenues
S, right across the street and on the grass.  We are the first and
last water/Gatorade stations for the 1700+ runners.  Race
begins at 7am.  We will provide coffee and bagels for the
volunteers.
Sign up with name and shirt size (give this info to Mary)
Bring trays, long handled spoons, plastic pitchers
(Label all with your name!)
We need someone to volunteer to bring coffee & bagels!
(please call Mary Moran if you are willing to do this)

NWC Minutes-December 2, 2017

NAPLES WALKING CLUB

December 2, 2017

President, Mary Moran, called the December meeting to order at 9:15 a.m.  Nineteen members were present.  Four December birthdays were recognized: Mary Ann Bohannon, Judy Galer, George Hedden, and Marge Peyrot.

The November 2017 Minutes were approved, as written.

Treausrer Report: Marsha McGuinness reported that the club has a balance of $1,241,60 as of November 30, 2017.  Marsha recommended that club send a $100 donation to St. Matthew’s House instead of collecting contributions at our monthly meetings. This recommendation was approved by the members.

Mileage: Joanne Dempsey reported that members mileage is available on our website and will be updated soon.

T-Shirts: We are building another order of twelve Sport Tek t-shirts. If you are interested in a short sleeve or tank top shirt, let Debbie Vallante know at debbiev1@comcast.net  or 239-304-9513.  Debbie sent out an e-mail on Friday with details about the colors and styles of shirts but she knows not everyone received it. She is having difficulty creating a distribution list right now that will allow her to send pictures of the styles and colors as the e-mails are not copying over correctly.  If you want her to send you an e-mail with pictures, send her an e-mail request and she will get it to you.

Old/New Business:

  • The 1.25 mile Juvenile Diabetes Walk is being held today at Venetian Village.
  • On December 10th the Pilot Club is sponsoring their 5K at Collier Regional Park beginning at 7:00 a.m., cost $27.
  • Mary encouraged members to sign up (include name and t-shirt size) to volunteer for the Naples Half Marathon water station which will be manned by club members on Sunday, January 14, 2018 beginning at 6:00 a.m.  Members should bring trays, long-handled spoons and plastic pitchers labeled with their names.
  • The Dave Cranor 5K will be held at 8:00 a.m. at Lowdermilk Park on January 1st.  The event is free.  Participation in the 2018 Big Dave Polar Plunge is $20; no wet suits are allowed.
  • The NAMI Walk will be held at Cambier Park on February 17th at 8:30 a.m.
  • The PSP Walk is scheduled for March 10th at Mackle Park on Marco Island, beginning at 10:30 a.m., $25 donation.
  • Bill MacDonald invited club members to participate in a day trip to the Ringling Museum in Sarasota in January. Bill will circulate a sign-up sheet.
  • Ginny MacDonald invited club members to participate in a walk on Christmas Day morning at 8:00 at the Ritz-Carlton on the Beach.  Members should meet in the Ritz parking garage which opens at 8:00.  After the walk members will visit the gingerbread house in the lobby of the Ritz.
  • Mary announced that Carole Levick has offered her community clubhouse for the club Christmas party if the club preferred to hold the event indoors.  The clubhouse is available on December 8th or December 15th.  Members decided that the Christmas Gathering will be held at the north gazebo in Lowdermilk Park on Gulf Shore Blvd. N. on Tuesday, December 12th from 4:00 until sunset.  Members should bring their own drinks and an appetizer to share.  Parking is by beach sticker or meters, or free on the street.  Members were invited to come at 3:00 for a beach walk before the party.  In the event of bad weather, members voted to have the gathering at Carole Levick’s clubhouse.  Lucy Sparrazza and Maria Saez volunteered to help Mary set up for the Christmas party.
  • Debbie Vallante, Lovi Holland and Deborah Stevenson served as the Nominating Committee to develop a list of nominees for the 2018 Board.  Club members approved election of the following club officers for 2018:  President, Gail Risner, Vice-President, Lucy Sparrazza and Mary Ann Bohannon, Secretary, Carol Mumford, Communications/Webmaster, Joanne Dempsey, Treasurer, Marsha McGuinness assisted by Carole Levick, Event Coordinator, Mary Moran, T-Shirts, Debbie Vallante, Membership, Deborah Stevenson.  Two positions, Marketing/Publicity and Historian/Photographer, are open, and the Committee asked for volunteers who might be interested in serving in these positions.

The next meeting of the Naples Walking Club will be held on January 6, 2018 at the Greenway.

NWC Minutes for November 2017

NAPLES WALKING CLUB
NAPLES, FL
November 11, 2017

President, Mary Moran, called the November meeting to order at 9:25 a.m. following our walk for Veteran’s Day at Freedom Park. Eighteen members were present.  Five have November birthdays: Linda McNerhany, Helen Lavelle, Lovi Holland, Wendy Bright and Pat Johnson.

The October 2017 Minutes were approved, as written.

Treausrer Report:  Marsha McGuinness reported that the club has a balance of $786.58 as of October 31, 2017.  Dues for 2018 should be submitted to Marsha.

Mileage:  Joanne Dempsey reported on those members having top mileage year-to-date.  The mileage is reported on our website.  Currently Jane Baker, Deborah Stevenson, and Linda McNerhany have the most mileage for 2017.

T-Shirts:  Debbie Vallante commented that it is nice to see everyone in their colorful t-shirts.  Members should email their requests for additional shirts to her.  Once she gets an order for 12 she will place the order.  The new lightweight shirts are $11, and there is a new sleeveless V-neck version of the shirt available.

Old/New Business:  Mary reported that the Heart Walk last Saturday was well-attended.  Please see picture on our website and Facebook page.  Upcoming events include:

  • Thanksgiving Day, Gobble Gobble 4-mile run/walk at Venetian Village starting at 7:25 a.m.  The Gulf Coast Runners 5K Turkey Trot is also held on Thanksgiving on 5th Avenue beginning at 7:30 a.m.
  • We have made a donation to the 1.25 mile Juvenile Diabetes Walk, Genevieve Homiller’s Team, which will be held on December 2, 2017 at 9:30 at Venetian Village.
  • Mary encouraged members to sign up to volunteer for the Naples Half Marathon water stop which will be manned by club members on Sunday, January 14, 2018.

  • Mary invited everyone to hear the HUG ukulele group at the Naples Central Avenue Library on December 21, 2017 at 3:30 p.m.
  • A location and date for the Christmas potluck is being determined.  Tentatively, it will be held during the week of December 11, 2017.

NWC Minutes for October 7, 2017

NAPLES WALKING CLUB

OCTOBER 7, 2017

President, Mary Moran, called the October meeting to order at 8:25 a.m.  Fifteen members and two guests were present.  Three members have October birthdays: Carol Greenberg, Carol Krafft, and Janine Jedlicka.

Guest speakers, Beth Brainard and Bill Ale, overviewed the mission of the Naples Pathways Coalition.  They are advocates for bicyclists, runners and walkers, and propose legislation, policies and work with planning organizations to improve conditions and ensure safety.  They also have several education programs including Lights for Bikes and safety programs for children.  They requested input from members on the safety needs of walkers, and encouraged members to join their organization.  Joanne Dempsey volunteered to serve on the Pathways Coalition Board and represent walkers.  Club members also approved a $100 donation to their organization. The May 2017 Minutes were approved, as written.

Treasurer Report:  Marsha McGuiness reported that the club has a balance of $921.54 as of September 30, 2017.

Membership and Mileage:  Mary reported that the club has 61 members.  Joanne Dempsey indicated that mileage is reported on the club website, and members can email their mileage to her.

T-Shirts:  Debbie Vallante has an inventory of club shirts for those who are interested.  She needs 4 more orders in order to place a new order for the lightweight shirts.  She requested that members email their orders to her.

Mary reviewed upcoming club activities:

  • The Cape Cod trip which 7 members are participating in begins this coming week.
  • The club will participate in the Collier County Heart Walk scheduled at 8 a.m. in Cambier Park on November 4th.  Members approved postponing our November meeting until November 11, 2017.   A $100 donation to the American Heart Association was approved.
  • Members approved that the November 11, 2017 walk on Veteran’s Day will be at Freedom Park at 8 a.m. followed by our monthly meeting at IHOP.
  • Members approved a $100 donation for Genevieve Homiller’s team (friend of a club member) for the Juvenile Diabetes Walk to be held at the Villages at Venetian Bay at 9:30 on December  2, 2017. Members are encouraged to participate in the 1.25 miles walk.  See walk@jdrf.org for more details.
  • Mary encouraged members to volunteer for manning the water stop for the Naples Half Marathon on January 14, 2018.
  • Lovi Holland, Debbie Vallante, and Deborah Stevenson volunteered to serve on the nominating committee to develop candidates for election as next year’s club officers.  The meeting to elect the new board will be held on December 2, 2017.
  • Everyone is invited to join the Happy Ukulele Group (HUG) singing and strumming on October 8, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. at the Collier County Headquarters Library on Orange Blossom and Airport Road.

The next meeting of the Naples Walking Club will be held on November 11, 2017 at the IHOP restaurant on Davis Avenue.
