NAPLES WALKING CLUB
MAY 6, 2017
President, Mary Moran, called the May meeting to order at 8:35 a.m. Fourteen members were present. Seven members have May birthdays; Linda Sullivan, Gail Risner, Dora Turner, Marie Saez, Nadine Kelly, Jo Anne Kovach, and Joanne Dempsey.
The April, 2017 Minutes were approved, as written.
Treasurer Report: Marsha McGuiness reported that the club has a balance of $954,34 as of April, 2017. She also reported that we had received thank you letters from NAMI of Collier County (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and St. Matthew’s House for our donations.
Membership: New member, Barbara Daltorio, was welcomed to the club.
Mileage: Joanne Dempsey reminded members to submit their mileage to her on a monthly basis.
Tee Shirts: Debbie Vallante circulated a sample of the new red tee shirt available to club members. Blue, pink, and white shirts are also available and Debbie has some shirts in inventory. White shirts are $10 and colored shirts are $11. Members should please let her know their needs.
National Walking Day: Mary reported the there was a good turnout from the club for the Blue Zone Project-sponsored National Walking Day on April 5th. Our Blue Zones contact is ChantePemberton@healthways.com.
Future Walks: Mary indicated that 10 members attended the Marco Island hills walk. She asked if members would be interested in a different and longer Marco Island hills walk and breakfast. Members were interested and Mary will schedule something most likely in the cooler weather. Mary also reminded members that On the Run in Gateway Plaza gives members a 10% discount.
A Memorial Day walk will be held at Eagle Lakes on Monday, May 29th at 8:00 a.m. Debbie will arrange for refreshments following the walk.
Joanne overviewed the upcoming trip to Cape Cod scheduled for October 8th-9th through the 14th. Please let Joanne know if you are interested.
Votes and Next Meeting: Mary reminded members that American Cancer Research provided us with additional copies of its newsletter article written on our Naples Walking Club. Members approved a $50 donation to American Cancer Research. Members also unanimously approved IHOP on Davis Blvd. as the new meeting place for our monthly meetings beginning with the October 7, 2017 meeting.

APRIL 1, 2017
President, Mary Moran, called the April meeting to order at 8:29 a.m. Eighteen members and two guests were present. Five members have April birthdays: Gloria Cahill, John Fermanis, Henry Johnson, Pat Wolanski, and Carol Mumford.
The March, 2017 Minutes were approved, as written. Members signed a birthday card for Henry Johnson’s 80th birthday. Pat Johnson is hosting a special 80th birthday party for him at the retirement home. Bonnie Vaughan also sent a note to the club with her good wishes.
Treasurer Report: Marsha McGuiness reported that the club has a balance of $1,065.82 as of March 31, 2017. She also reported that we had received a nice thank you letter from St. Matthew’s House for our donation.
Mileage and Newsletter: Joanne Dempsey indicated that mileage for our members is reported on our website. Mary Moran thanked Joanne for the publication of our first informative monthly newsletter.
Tee-Shirts: Debbie Vallante indicated that our order for t-shirts will be placed on Monday. Since we do not have the minimum order of 36, the shirts will be $2 more than originally quoted.
National Walking Day: Mary Moran encouraged club members to participate in National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 5th at 5:30. This is an event sponsored by the Blue Zones Project involving a one-mile walk leaving from Cambier Park downtown and ending at the Naples Community Hospital’s Garden of Hope and Courage where wine and refreshments will be served. Register online to participate at https://bluezonesnationalwalkingday.eventbrite.com. Please wear our club shirts. Participants will also receive a Blue Zones shirt. Our club does not yet have enough participants for designation as a Blue Zone group, i.e. 17 participants needed.
Cape Cod Trip: Joanne Dempsey provided an overview of the Cape Cod trip which is scheduled for October 8th or 9th in Falmouth, MA. There is a wonderful walking trail along the water and a block of rooms has been reserved at special pricing. A bus is available from Logan Airport in Boston to Falmouth. Members were encouraged to inform Joanne if they will be participating.
Marco Island Hill Walk: A walk in the Marco Island hills will be held next Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Meet at Publix, 175 S. Barfield Dr., corner of San Marco Rd., with brunch following at The Red Rooster.
Other Upcoming Events: Gail Risner and Mary Moran have been asked to participate in the Gardens in Bloom Arts Show to be held April 7th-9th from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. A reception will be held on Saturday April 8th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at 3899 Mannix Drive, #420. Mary Moran will also host a house concert at her home on Sunday, April 23rd at 1:00. Popular Bluegrass band will entertain with guitars, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and bass players.
Next Meeting: The next meeting of the Naples Walking Club will be Saturday, May 6, 2017.
After Mary’s house concert on Sunday, March 19th, many folks asked for Mary’s lemon cake recipe, so here is the recipe for the cake and the glaze. Enjoy! (and thanks Mary!)

NAPLES WALKING CLUB
MARCH 4, 2017
President, Mary Moran, called the March meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. Twenty-one members were present. Three members have March birthdays: Ginny MacDonald, Janice Rhodes and Sarah Sprague.
The February, 2017 Minutes were approved, as written.
Treasurer Report: Marsha McGuiness reported that the club has a balance of $1,013.85 as of February, 2017. She also reported that we had received thank you letters from St. Matthew’s House and Grace Place for our donations; both organizations were very appreciative.
Membership: Mary Moran welcomed new members Deborah Stevenson and Terri Muldoon to the club.
Mileage: Joanne Dempsey encouraged everyone to submit their mileage to her on a monthly basis.
Tee Shirts: Debbie Vallante indicated that she would be meeting with the t-shirt company. She asked if members would be interested in pastel or other-colored t-shirts rather than only the white shirts. Members responded in the affirmative.
Relay for Life: Mitchell Zale, Relay for Life Volunteer, was our Guest Speaker. The Relay to support the American Cancer Society will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 beginning at 6:00 p.m. and ending on Saturday April 8, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. at Gulfview Middle School. This year’s event has a Dr. Suess theme. He invited the club to join in supporting the Relay and described various options for participating. One option includes having a team table where we could distribute information on the club. About 4,500 participants walked in last year’s relay and this year’s goal is $365,000. All levels of participation are welcome.
NAMI Walk: Mary reported that the NAMI Walk in Cambier Park on February 25th was well-attended by club members. It was a fun and very worthwhile event.
National Walking Day: Mary encouraged all members to participate in National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 5th at 5:30 at Cambier Park. It is sponsored by the Blue Zones Project and will begin with a one-mile walk to the Naples Community Hospital’s Garden of Hope and Courage. Participants will get a Blue Zones t-shirt, enjoy wine after 5, and be eligible for the $1,000 prize drawing if they RSVP on Eventbrite: http://bit.ly/Q8ziN Club members were encouraged to arrive by 5:00 and wear their Walking Club t-shirts. Mary is continuing to try to get our club recognized as a Blue Zone group.
Picture Party: Carol Greenberg is hosting a wine and cheese party on Monday, March 13th from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at her home. Members will be able to peruse old scrapbooks and take pictures they are interested in. Carol also reminded members about the upcoming Cure PSP Awareness and Memorial Walk being held on Saturday, March 18th at 10:30 a.m. in Mackle Park on Marco Island. Please let Carol know if you are interested in participating.
Palm Cottage: Mary circulated a copy of a brochure on Naples Historical Society’s walking tour of Olde Naples from Palm Cottage on Wednesday’s. She also circulated a sign-up sheet for several alternative dates. Cost of the event is $22 for non-Historical Society members, and $16 for members. The tour starts at 9:30 and last for two hours.
Other Proposed Events: Mary proposed several future events including a walk through the hills of Caxambus on March Island which would be on a Saturday morning with breakfast following. She also suggested a 7-mile hike at Collier-Seminole State Park which would be held during the week. She encouraged members to visit our website at www.napleswalkingclub.org , and to join our facebook page and post pictures. Wendy Bright reported that her sister-in-law saw information on our club in a recent magazine publication.
Next Meeting: The next meeting of the Naples Walking Club will be on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Perkins Restaurant on Pine Ridge Road.
There was no other business and the meeting was adjourned at 8:47 a.m.
The Naples Walking Club March meeting will take place this Saturday, March 4. at Perkins on Pine Ridge following a 7 am walk starting at the Vineyard Park. See you there!
Our 25th Anniversary/winter party is this Sunday at Forest Lakes Clubhouse, 1058 Forest Lakes Drive (not Blvd) at 4 pm, with committee set up at 3. Each member will bring a pot luck dish, but keep in mind that there will be a cake! Wine is provided, but bring beer if you prefer. It was decided that there is no charge for guests/spouses. The Happy Ukulele Group (HUG) of Naples will be playing and we all can sing along.
