Itinerary

The following iconic Low Country landmarks that make Charleston unique are “must-sees” in our adventure itinerary: (D = Dinner; B = Breakfast)

Sunday, Day 1: Overnight in Savannah (D)

Monday, Day 2: Arrive Charleston; tour Boone Hall Plantation in AM (B,D)

Boone Hall Plantation. Plantations were a staple of the economy, culture and lifestyle of the pre-Civil War South. The Spanish moss-draped canopy of the majestic “Avenue of Oaks” (planted in 1743) leading to Boone Hall transports one back 250 years to Charleston’s plantation past.

We will tour the Manor House and gardens, listen to traditional African tales from a Gullah storyteller, and visit 9 original slave cabins, some of the few still standing in the Southeast. Crops have grown continually here for more than 300 years.

Tuesday, Day 3: Privately Guided AM Walk/Ride Charleston Tour (2 -2.5 hours); Walking Club hike in PM(TBD) (B,D). Included, but not limited to:

In 1861, The Citadel (Military College) cadets fired the first shots of the American Civil War when they opened fire on the Union ship Star of the West entering Charleston’s harbor. On April 12, 1861, shore batteries under the command of General Pierre G. T. Beauregard opened fire on the Union-held Fort Sumter in the harbor.

The Battery, aka “Battery Park”, is a popular park located in downtown Charleston where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers meet. With great views of Fort Sumter, Castle Pinckney, and Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, the park is a great place to come to see the sights of Charleston from a distance. It is also a wonderful place to learn more about Charleston’s history, with its statues, monuments and old cannons and cannonballs that children love to climb on.

In the 18th century, heavy rocks were used to fortify the shores of the Cooper River. That fortification became the famous promenade known as the High Battery, one of the best places to stroll in the park. The Battery first became a public park in 1837 and was also used as a place for artillery storage during the American Civil War.

Four Corners of Law. The intersection of Meeting and Broad Streets in the heart of the historic district is historically known as “the four corners of law” because the intersection hosted buildings from each level of government: the Courthouse (state law), City Hall (municipal law), the Federal Building and U.S. Post Office (federal law), and Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church (canon law). (See pink sketch above). Sweetgrass basket weavers sell their wares on this picturesque corner and nearby Washington Park is a nice shady spot to enjoy lunch from a street vendor.

Wednesday, Day 4: 9 AM Ft. Sumter Tour; Walking Club hike in PM-TBD (B,D)

Fort Sumter…Where The Civil War Began

When South Carolina seceded from the Union in 1860, Fort Sumter became the tinderbox for a war that would tear the country apart over the next 5 years. Decades of growing strife between North and South erupted in civil war on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal fort in Charleston Harbor. Fort Sumter surrendered 34 hours later. Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back. Ammunition is still embedded in the walls of this fortification that hosted the first Confederate shots fired during the Civil War.

Steeples were used as lighthouses and the church bells and iron gates were melted down for cannons to aid the Confederacy. The spires were actually used during the bombardment of the city to site cannons and the story goes that St. Michael’s steeple was even painted black at one time to make it difficult to see at night.

Thursday, Day 5: Lv. Charleston for Ocala (B,D)

Monday, April 22, 2013
Meet at 7 AM in the Tin City parking lot at the corner of 6th Avenue and 11th St. (near the General Store) for a 4-mile walk to the City Dock, the Pier and the Beach, followed by a breakfast together.

All year long you walk all over the earth. Literally. You also drive on it, bike on it, and play on it. You surf in earth’s oceans, chill out in the shade of its trees, ski down its snowy slopes. So on this day, do something nice for the planet that does so much for you.

Earth Week Tip: If you’re using A/C this time of year, turn the temperature up 1 degree. If you’re using heat, turn it down 1 degree. Changing the temperature by 1 degree will save you 3% to 4% on your electric bill and it will prevent about 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.
National Arbor Day

Friday, April 26, 2013
Meet at 7 AM in the Tin City parking lot at the corner of 6th Avenue and 11th St. (near the General Store) for a 4-mile walk to the City Dock, the Pier and the Beach, followed by a breakfast together. If we’re going to cut down a bunch of trees to make houses and printer paper and matchsticks and whatnot, we’re going to have to start planting a few more. This is the idea behind Arbor Day, an annual holiday for planting trees.

The first Arbor Day was observed in 1872 with an estimated 1 million trees planted that day. And now that the holiday is celebrated in many countries worldwide, we think it’s safe to say there will be plenty of shade to go around.

In the US, the national holiday is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April. Each state celebrates its own state holiday. Florida’s Arbor Day is celebrated on the third Friday in January.

Welcome Spring!! – Catch a glimpse of a hummingbird flying left, right, up, down, backwards and even upside down or duck to miss the loud fluttering sound it makes as it zooms past. Springtime is a buzzy time for bees with all the garden flowers and native plants in bloom, you’re sure to see many honey bees about their buzziness of collecting nectar and pollen. In Springtime, birds start building their nests and the farmers deliver new-born lambs.

Bagels and coffee were purchased for 21 members and with only 11 members showing up, you do the math.
